A reception, open to the public, will be held from 3 to 5 p.m., Saturday, March 11. Inspired by watching a space shuttle launch at the Kennedy Space Center after winning a Christa McAuliffe Fellowship, and by viewing films of outer space taken by the astronauts, Demsky developed a series of paintings that merge abstract elements of science and art and evoke the mysteries of the universe. “Demsky’s work, vital and enchanting, stimulates ongoing recall,” says Vivienne Thaul Wechter, Ph.D., Fordham University artist in residence and curator of exhibitions and acquisitions. “Her multiple experiences are expressed in luminous, sensual colors, in the ultimate combination of craft with vision.” DATE: MARCH 2 TO 30 TIME: 9 A.M. A reception, open to the public, will take place from 5 to 7 p.m., March 3, with a poetry reading by Wechter at 6:30 p.m. and presentation of the movie Thunderbolt, a documentary of her life and work, at 7 p.m. Wechter is an abstract painter, sculptor and poet as well as a Fordham professor of interdisciplinary arts and psychology of creativity. Art critics have described her work as “visionary” and “unashamedly odd.” She has been widely exhibited in the United States and abroad. The second exhibit of Peck’s work at Fordham this year, “This Life” includes the acclaimed life-size, three-figure grouping “Appalachia.” The theme of “people alone and in families” figures predominantly in her work, said Peck, a professor at Ramapo College in New Jersey. “Peck’s formidable intellect is wed to artistic propulsion to produce a remarkable range of work,” said Vivienne Thaul Wechter, Ph.D., University artist in residence and curator of exhibitions and acquisitions. “Her sculpture communicates peace, tranquillity, danger, violence and sensuality.” DATE: MARCH 15 TO DEC. 3, 2000 TIME: 9 A.M. Sylvia Moore Jackson, Jeanne Jarvis and Edith C. Strange, all graduates of Howard University in Washington, D.C., have created a diverse collection of oils and watercolors.
