The annual award honors top-quality research in communications policy and ethics. Previous winners include: Watching Jim Crow (Duke University Press, 2004) by Steven D. Classen, Ph.D., California State University, Los Angeles; and Campaigning Online (Oxford University Press, 2003) by Bruce Bimber, Ph.D., University of California, Santa Barbara, and Richard Davis, Ph.D., Brigham Young University.

The center is named in memory of Donald H. McGannon (FCRH ’40), former CEO of Westinghouse Broadcasting Corporation. Its mission is to conduct, support, reward, and disseminate research in the fields of communications policy and ethics, with a particular emphasis on research that addresses the public interest dimensions of media policy.
