Photo courtesy of Trudi BartowOn June 13, Fordham Law hosted an event aimed at helping one of their own stay healthy.

The community rallied around Larry Abraham, head of instructional services at the Law School library, who is experiencing kidney failure and hoping to find a kidney donor. The event provided education and information about kidney donation as well as a chance for people to get tested with a cheek swab to see if they would be a candidate for donation. Rabbi Josh Sturm of Renewal, a Brooklyn-based organization that coordinates kidney donations, spoke to the crowd about his work with patients and donors.

Friends of Abraham’s are hosting a second event at Brotherhood Synagogue, 28 Gramercy Park South, on June 20 at 6:30 p.m., which will offer another opportunity for potential donors to be tested. Rabbi Sturm will give a talk and a kidney donor will be on hand to share his own story.

Organizers ask all who can to come even if they don’t intend to get tested. Education and spreading the word are key.

For more information, visit this Facebook page. People looking to help Abraham or find out more about kidney donation can email Renewal at this dedicated address: [email protected].
