Hooker, Ph.D., who celebrates her 100th birthday today!

Her many accomplishments during the last century include: becoming the first black woman to enlist in the United States Coast Guard‬, surviving the Tulsa Race Riots‬ of 1921, and working as a prominent researcher in school psychology‬.

Many well-wishers have been saluting Dr. Hooker and her work in civil rights‬ today, including a couple of presidents — President Barack Obama and our very own Father McShane!

Listen to an interview with Dr. Hooker on WFUV.
