Carlos María Galli, STD, a priest from the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires, will lead four discussions over the next two days on both the Lincoln Center and Rose Hill campuses. All discussions, which are sponsored by the Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education, are free and open to the public.
“Father Galli has been a close theological collaborator with Pope Francis from [the pope’s]days as archbishop of Buenos Aires,” said Claudio Burgaleta, SJ, associate professor at GRE. “His lectures at Fordham will provide a window into the pope’s theological influences, especially Argentina’s take on liberation theology.”
Father Galli is the dean of the theology faculty at the Catholic University of Argentina, where he also serves as director of doctoral studies. He specializes in the study of Lucio Gera, the father of teología del pueblo, or liberation theology. In addition, Father Galli has a long record as consultant to both the bishops of Argentina and the Episcopal Conference of Latin America (CELAM).
Shortly after his election, Pope Francis named Father Galli to the International Theological Commission, a group of theologians that serve as advisers to the pope. He collaborated with Pope Francis for the final document of Aparecida, one of the main sources of Pope Francis’ vision.
“Father Galli’s own thought makes a contribution to pastoral urban theology—ministry of the city and to the city. He argues that the nature of cities is such that they demand a new form of evangelization,” Father Burgaleta said. This new evangelism calls “for the church to go out of itself and engage in a new evangelization that was especially attentive to the peripheries of our world,” which echoes what the pope proposes in Evangelii Gaudium.

“The encyclical is going to generate opposition, so Pope Francis going to have to frame it within a broader understanding of Catholic ecclesiology, the authority of the pope, and the nature of moral teaching itself… A lot of conservative Catholics are vocally opposed to the pope saying anything about the environment. Yet, the fact that the pope is discussing these issues is not new. For instance, John Paul II released the Common Declaration on Environmental Ethics in 2002, which was framed in terms of social justice teachings… [The difference was that] as long as Catholic conservatives in the United States saw themselves as supported by John Paul II and Benedict XVI, they could overlook statements about the environment and social justice and focus on their key issues—homosexuality, birth control, and so forth. Now, however, they are more willing to directly oppose the pope…I don’t think that the opposition to the pope on these matters within the church is very deep, but it is very organized and it tends to come from the wealthier component of church, so they have a disproportionate ability to be heard. The pope needs to try to win this component over. It’s not about winning or losing—it’s his pastoral duty. And that’s part of the reason why it’s so important that he frame these arguments using doctrinal language.”
“No matter which side of the climate change debate you are on, most of us can agree that environmental changes and natural disasters have an undue impact on the poor. I remember a study some of my colleagues did in the Philippines on the effect of urbanization and unregulated car pollution on the cognitive ability of young children living in squatter’s areas along congested highways. My colleagues measured the level of lead poisoning as well as the serious cognitive damage that emissions had caused among the children. Since that time, leaders have successfully worked to restrict lead emissions in the Philippines and have given these children a fighting chance for a better future.
“I am confident that Francis will encourage all of us to work on behalf of our poorer brothers and sisters who desperately need additional resources to confront environmental challenges. We Americans are doing this is through our various foreign aid programs … [In] the Philippines we are assisting local communities in building typhoon resistant housing, … and in poor arid areas of Latin America such as Northeast Brazil we are supporting efforts to develop reliable sources of potable water, [both]efforts to promote economic development that is ecologically sustainable and targeted to benefit the most vulnerable. In his encyclical, as well as his UN address in September, Francis will be encouraging us to do even more and to do it even better.”
“In issuing this major teaching document, Pope Francis brings fundamental Catholic convictions about the dignity and flourishing of human beings and the rest of God’s creation into dialogue with the pressing social and global realities of our day. He relies on scripture, Catholic tradition, and the best scholarly and scientific knowledge available to us today, drawing on the work of the Vatican’s own distinguished panel of scientific advisors, the Pontifical Academy of Sciences—80 of the most distinguished scientists from around the world, including Nobel laureates. Earlier this year, the Academy of Sciences held an international gathering, “Climate Change and the Common Good,” whose final statement affirmed that “human-induced climate change is a scientific reality,” and that work to mitigate it, and especially its effects on the poor, is a “moral and religious imperative for humanity.”

Fordham University’s Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education (GRE) has received a $100,000 grant to help increase enrollment in the Hispanic ministry program that is part of its Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies, and to develop a doctoral concentration in the emerging field.
The three-year grant, awarded to GRE by an anonymous donor, will also be used to bolster outreach efforts to Hispanic parishioners through the school’s Spanish-language website, known as Isidoro, which offers courses in theology and scripture targeted at Hispanic parishioners and churches with large Hispanic congregations.
Some of the funding will also be used to develop an institute focused on Hispanic ministry, said Claudio Burgaleta, S.J., assistant professor of theology.
“This [grant]will allow us to serve a community that is the present and the future of the Catholic Church by providing leadership training for those in that community,” said Father Burgaleta.
The Hispanic community is among the fastest growing populations within the American Catholic Church. According to 2000 census figures, Hispanics account for 71 percent of all the growth in the U.S. Catholic population since 1960, and there are now 4,000 parishes with a Hispanic ministry. Moreover, some 37 percent of the Hispanic population in the United States is under the age of 18.
Currently, GRE’s percentage of Hispanic students stands at seven percent, and Father Burgaleta said that the grant, coupled with ongoing efforts, should help the school push those numbers higher to “begin to reflect the diversity of the New York Archdiocese.”
Rev. Anthony Ciorra, Ph.D., dean of GRE, called the grant a “quantum leap forward” for the graduate school and its plan to enroll more members of the growing Hispanic population. “This grant enables us to build on Fordham’s legacy of outreach to the Latino community,” he said.
As part of the master’s degree in pastoral studies, students can opt to focus on Latino ministry and take 12 credits in Hispanic studies, ministry, theology and spirituality, both within GRE and through Fordham’s Latin American and Latino Studies Institute (LALSI). The Isidoro site, which Father Burgaleta helped launch in July 2007, offers an 18-credit online certificate program in Hispanic faith formation. “The influence of Latino culture, language and traditions raise different concerns to be addressed [in ministry,]” said Father Burgaleta. “We want to build our curriculum to meet those concerns.”
